Was the Fukushima disaster a Biblical prophecy fulfilled?

A massive earthquake triggered a tsunami off the coast of Japan that swallowed three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi site. Since the disaster, hundreds of tons of radioactive waste has leaked into the ocean and nuclear fall out has wrapped around the globe. While the Fukushima disaster caught Japan by surprise, many Christians believe the disaster was long prophesied in the Bible.

The Book of Revelation states the world will undergo a seven year period of judgement known as the tribulation. There are twenty-one judgments in all, which are divided into three categories: the seven seal judgments, the seven trumpet judgments and the seven bowl judgments.(1)

The burning mountain

The Book of Revelation relies heavily on metaphor when describing each judgement. Nevertheless, some of the verses have the ominous undertones of the Fukushima disaster. For example, Revelation 8:8-9 reads:

And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea; and the third part of the sea became blood; and the third part of the creatures that were in the sea died, those which have lives; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.(2)

At first glance, “great mountain burning with fire” seems to describe a volcano. Nevertheless, it’s difficult to understand how a volcano would literally fall into the ocean. An equally plausible interpretation is the Fukushima power plant is the “great mountain burning with fire” which was “cast into the sea” by the tsunami in 2011.

Furthermore, as noted earlier, the Fukushima power plant has been leaking deadly radiation into the sea for years, which has caused an onslaught of dead marine animals. Some reports suggest the the Fukushima disaster has contaminated up to one-third of the world’s oceans — just as the Bible predicted.

In 2013, for example, a warm body of water known infamously as the blob was discovered that stretched 1,000 miles in diameter and 300 feet deep from the Gulf of Alaska to Baja California. The blob has disrupted the ocean’s ecosystem, causing many fish to die and others to plague the coast of California. While the mainstream media has remained suspiciously quiet about the blob, many believe that radiation has cooked the ocean and caused the surge in dead marine animals.

Wormwood

Other scholars reference Revelation 8:10 as evidence for the Bible prophesying the Fukushima disaster:

The third angel blew his trumpet and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the fountains of water.  The name of the star is Wormwood.  A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died of the water, because it was made bitter.3

Many have interpreted wormwood as the Fukushima nuclear power plant. “Fell from heaven” and “blazing like a torch” can be interpreted to mean the nuclear rods melting to their core. “Fountains of water” are not necessarily in reference to clear water, but to radioactive water leaking from the power plant.

The water is bitter now in the sense that it is poisonous. Growing concerns of water contamination have caused several countries to impose a ban or restriction on seafood imported from the Fukushima Prefecture. In addition, radiation from the power plant has soured nearby river beds and water ducts.

The Book of Revelation states that the tribulation will last seven years. The Fukushima disaster happened about 4 ½ years ago. If these prophecies are true, the world has a rough 2 ½ years ahead.
